Mat And The Band Are Getting Really Good

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Given how well our band has been playing recently, we made the decision to invest a fair bit of money into a professional grade music video.

I think it turned out great, and we’re excited to see the impact which it’s going to have.

Check it out for yourself.

Mid-Week Downer

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Usually I post a Mid-Week Pick-Me-Up, but this week, I just had to post this story.

It’s incredibly sad, and incredibly…incredible.

Twelve years ago, Sonny Graham’s heart was failing and he was on the verge of death, until he received a call from doctors, saying a donor heart had just become available.

That heart belonged to Terry Cottle, 33, who had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

The operation was a success and soon after, Mr Graham, 69, contacted the organ donor agency, saying he wanted to thank Mr Cottle’s family.

He began writing to Mr Cottle’s widow, Cheryl, 39, and they soon fell in love and were married in 2004, moving to the US state of Georgia.

After the wedding, Mrs Graham said: “It helped me so much. Meeting Sonny made it easier for me, knowing something so good came from something so bad.”

In a newspaper article published in 2006, Mr Graham said he felt an instant and unusual attachment when he met his donor’s widow.

“I felt like I had known her for years,” Mr Graham said. “I couldn’t keep my eyes off her. I just stared.”

But now, 12 years after the operation, Mrs Graham’s life has been rocked by another tragedy.

Mr Graham killed himself with a shotgun, in circumstances similar to those which claimed Mr Cottle’s life.

His friends said he had shown no signs of being depressed and were at a loss to explain his sudden death.

According to scientists, there are more than 70 documented cases of transplant patients taking on some of the personality traits of the organ donors.

Mid-Week Pick-Me-Up

This will be a pick-me-up only for those people who have the cajones to admit that they know who the phrase ‘Five bad brothers from the Beantown land’ refers to.

What, you don’t remember the classic single ‘Games’?

Come on, admit it.

We all had at least a passing interest in the New Kids on the Block back in the day…and now they’re reuniting.

They’re pushing 40 now, but by all acounts, they seem to look just about the same.

If you’re not acquainted with the boys (or NKOTB, as we referred to them), then catch up on some history below by seeing them in fine form.

Of course, for true NKOTB purists, there’s no better song than their ode to The Beatles (piccoloo trumpet and all, a la Penny Lane) called Tonight.

Beautiful.

:-)

After watching these videos, several questions pop to mind…

  • what the heck was all of the fuss about back then?
  • why would Donnie Wahlberg ever allow himself to be a part of this?
  • why didn’t they just call the band Jordan Knight and the Jordannaires?
  • how did Joey’s eyes get so darn blue?
  • does Danny Wood serve any function at all in this group?
  • why does Jonathan Knight look like he always wants to be somewhere else?

This is from last night’s American Idol.

I don’t really care for American Idol, but I like this guy…and especially this song.

It’s from a Chris Cornell arrangement of a Michael Jackson classic, and if you close your eyes, the guy sounds virtually identical to the former Soundgarden frontman.

He definitely seems to be this year’s Chris Daughtry.

    Enjoy.

Here’s a nice little diversion from the East Coast.

They’re a 2-piece band called The Superfantastics, and the singer is actually my sister-in-law’s boyfriend..

I met him awhile back, and after finding these on YouTube, I tell ya…I’m hooked.

    They’ve got a great sound.

    Enjoy.

For my first M-W P-M-U of 2008, I thought I’d recount the story of quite possibly the funniest thing that has ever happened to me.

    Here’s the story…

One day, I was exchanging emails with someone trying to meet a deadline later in the afternoon.

As the messages were whizzing back and forth, the person evidently forgot to save something and lost an attachment I had sent only moments before.

The reply I got was as follows…

Rob, I must apologize for this, but could you please re-send the previous attachment.

    Sorry for the incontinence.

I’ve got to tell you, I nearly busted a gut with that one.

I received another email about an hour later explaining that the person’s spell-checker had auto-corrected the misspelling of ‘inconvenience’ to ‘incontinence.’

I still have that email and I read it from time to time for a laugh.

Just Because I’m In A Year In Review-Type Mode

    I’m a basketball player.

    I can’t shoot.

    I don’t dribble that well.

    And I can’t jump.

    But…I’ve always loved to pass.

In honor of people like me, I give you the following…

    Advice From Dear Margo

    Friday, December 28th, 2007

I came across the following advice column online and found it…well, odd.

DEAR MARGO: My boyfriend, “Matt,” and I have been together a little more than four years. We have a very strong relationship and have discussed marriage and children, but we both agree we should wait. Well, a couple of weeks ago, out of the blue, Matt says, “I don’t know why people stuff their Christmas stockings before Christmas. That’s what Santa should do.” My response was, “Well, maybe some people don’t believe in Santa.” He didn’t say anything, but I could tell he was really bothered by this.

He has always been really into Christmas (me, not so much), but this hasn’t been a problem for us in the past. My concern now is that I don’t want our children to have a false belief in Santa. Is this something that should be a big concern, or should I leave it alone until we actually have children?

    - CONCERNED GRINCH

    Margo’s reply?

    Cliched, but quite nice.

    My reply?

Are you actually thinking of still marrying this bozo?

Sometimes you’ve just got to be direct.

    A Very Perry Christmas

    Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

In the past, I’ve posted before about my love of the band Journey, and my sometime disdain for Christmas music.

This video brings them both together in a beautiful way.

(Note: You have to be a Journey fan to get most of the jokes)

    A classic.
